Amazon Kindle 2 Textured Silicone Case Skin (Black) Review
One of things I liked most about the original Kindle was the rubber back, it afforded a nice grip on the reader. One of the things I genuinely dislike about my new Kindle (a K2i) is the all metal back. Between the thinner size and the metal back, well the K2i felt very slippery in my hands, taking a conscious effort to hold onto.
The other issue I had with the Kindle in general is the all white body. I like to read in the full sun and the white body simply reflects too much light, more than the backlight on the LCD devices people who claim are a problem for them when reading...but magically those folks can read outside just fine....weird, huh? Anyway, anyone who lives a place where the sun, even in winter, gets high overhead will likely notice the frame reflects a lot of light making reading outside under the noon-day sun a bit of a problem for more than a brief period.
This skin covers all of those issues for me. It makes it just ever so slightly thicker, adds a rubberized silicone outer skin that you can grip and not feel as if it's going to fall out of your hand (I have dry hands so this is a general issue for me with many items), PLUS it is a nice flat-black color that does not reflect the bright sunlight into my eyes making it much easier to read outside. Now I feel I can read until I am tired of reading outside, rather than the eye-strain from the sunlight reflected back off the Kindle's case.
There is, however, one drawback and that is, the joystick is recessed below the skin, so if you are like me and keep your nails very short, plus have nice fat fingers...hehehehe...it is really not easy to use the joystick when navigating menus or moving the "cursor" through the text on a page. But I don't feel this is a very big deal for the majority of people. I can practice and/or leave my nails a bit longer so I can work it from the sides. Again, to me this is a minor issue, though one I had not considered when ordering.
The cover slides on easy, just remember not to overstretch or force the cover onto the Kindle. Slide it in, I slid the keyboard end in first then slipped the upper corners on without any issues or over stretching which would leave a loose edge around the screen.
Oh, the buttons feel just as responsive as without the cover. The cover itself has a very soft "buttery" feel to it. And because it's a silicone-rubber thingy, there is a slight feel of it being slippery, but in reality it's not.
So, I really do recommend this skin for your Kindle. Especially if you are looking to read outside more and if you have a problem holding onto your reader because it is either too thin or the metal back is slippery in your hands. Plus it looks really nice compared to other similar covers. If you look, the cut-out for the keyboard "fits" the keyboard shape as closely as possible hiding more of the white from the case.
Now I feel I can use a simple pouch to carry my Kindle with me rather than a "cover" that defeats the whole idea of small and portable...plus it's super inexpensive yet well made.
Oops!! One last observation. All of the ports, holes, switches, whatever are still accessible. One thing I would wonder about though is if you keep your reader inside one of those book-style covers and use the hooks to hold it in, getting those hooks into the reader can be trickier. I have a Cole Haan cover here and just tried it, the hooks will slip in, but I would not want to remove the reader from the cover on a regular basis because either the hooks are gonna bend or the skin will be cut from the pressure or, even worse, you might crack the Kindle's case (from what I read, and the sense I got from trying the Cole Haan we have this can be somewhat of a common problem for people using the book-style covers that use the hooks to secure the reader. This skin might make it a problem if you intend on putting the reader inside the book-style cover with the skin in place.
