This is a fine basic case with no metal hooks (The hooks that go into the side of the kindle 2)
Yes, there is a smell, like many other new items made out of plastic. It goes away. The case was not as malleable as I had hoped and the snap was getting in the way. I clipped off the snap and the inside pocket and the pen holder to get down to just the folder. It will lay flat face down, and is starting to lay flat face forward. Should be fine when it is broken in completely. I read too many cracked kindle stories with the standard metal hook style case so I went with this one and also bought a foam net book case with carrying handle for carrying around. I like what I ended up with for the price I paid. I use the kindle in this case all the time and then stick the case and all in the net book padded brief when I go somewhere.
