1st Generation Amazon Kindle Silicone Skin Case (Amazon Kindle Reading Device NOT included) Review
This high quality Silicone Skin Case is perfect for protecting your Kindle from scratches and bumps.
>> Function
All controls and ports are accessible. The thick silicone skin is a plus because it provides the covered areas with ample protection against scratches and minor bumps. The only crucial area left exposed is the screen, but you can always get yourself a screen protector for it.
The skin doesn't add very much bulk to the Kindle and it's very light.
>> Form
The Cut-outs for the screen, ports (USB, Power, and Phone Jack), power switch, wireless switch, speaker, scroll-wheel, and keyboard are all accurately lined up. The right side of the cut-out for the screen extends over to the cursor window so the cursor window isn't obscured.
I measured the thickness of the skin and it turns out the skins is actually 3 mm in thickness, not 1mm as stated in the product description.
>> Fit
You actually use the screen cutout as an opening for getting your Kindle into the skin. Once in place, the skin provides a very secure and snug fit.
>> Some quibbles:
- The thick silicone makes the scroll-wheel a little recessed, which can interfere with the use of the scroll-wheel - not terribly bothersome; it just takes a little getting used to.
- The skin actually depresses the Prev Page button very slightly so the button doesn't readily spring back up after being pressed.
>> Conclusion:
Despite a couple of minor issues (that I'm not overly concerned about), the skin is actually very functional and provides very good protection for your Kindle. I would definitely recommended it!
>> Suggestions for further protecting your kindle:
- I recommend the Boxwave Anti-Glare Screen Protector to protect the screen of your Kindle (It also comes in a 3-Pack). Boxwave makes outstanding screen protectors. I've used some of theirs for my Pocket PC - they are washable, resuable, durable, and will not leave a sticky residue when you peel them off. They are also surprisingly easy to apply and will not trap air bubbles like a lot of other protective films do.
- I have taped 2 strips of 3M Magic Tape across the keyboard to protect it from dirt/smudges. The tape doesn't leave a sticky residue when you peel it off and it blends in well with your Kindle so it doesn't make your Kindle look tacky!
